Feeling More in Control with IBS

When this client first came to see me, his experience will sound familiar to many people with IBS.

He noticed that symptoms such as bloating and urgency would often appear at times of pressure, planning or when he needed things to go smoothly. This created a pattern where his attention stayed on his gut, trying to work out what was happening and what might happen next.

Like many people, he found himself anticipating the worst and trying to stay one step ahead of his symptoms.

This is exhausting.

It can feel as though your body is unpredictable and that you have to constantly manage it.

Instead of focusing only on symptoms, we worked on something different.

We focused on how his system was interpreting and responding to signals.

He began to learn how to notice what was happening in his body without immediately reacting. He developed a way of distinguishing between normal digestive signals and signals linked to stress or thinking ahead.

This created a shift.

Rather than everything feeling urgent, his body began to feel more organised.

Over time, he described several important changes.

He felt less pressure around symptoms. Bloating no longer automatically meant something was wrong. He became more able to stay calm in situations that previously triggered discomfort.

Most importantly, he no longer felt the need to constantly monitor his body.

Instead, he began to trust it.

This had a real impact on everyday life.

Situations such as travelling or time pressure, which had previously been difficult, became more manageable. He found himself responding in the moment rather than anticipating problems.

By the end of our work, he described feeling more relaxed and more in control, but in a calm and natural way rather than through effort.

His symptoms reduced, but more importantly, his confidence in his body increased.
He left with a simple way of approaching things.
